STRESS URINARY INCONTINENCE

GSI's SPACEMAKER® surgical balloon dissector provides access for minimally invasive surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) through a procedure known as bladder neck suspension. The surgery is aimed at repositioning the muscles that support the bladder and bladder neck, returning it to the normal position.

Stress urinary incontinence is characterized by uncontrollable loss of urine during increased abdominal pressure (coughing, sneezing, laughing) due to displacement of the bladder neck. This is a condition most commonly experienced by women who have experienced childbirth.

There are 110,000 procedures performed annually to correct SUI in the U.S. There are an estimated 1.7 million candidates for surgical treatment. These individuals typically attempt to manage the leakage problem with diapers, pads, Kegel exercises, biofeedback, "plugs", etc. Surgery is the only long-term solution to the problem of stress urinary incontinence.

The ability to perform this procedure in a minimally invasive manner results in surgery being less invasive, compared to open surgery, and therefore a more attractive solution for the patient.

You should discuss the potential risks and benefits of all treatment options with a doctor so you can be fully informed prior to treatment.
